Healdsburg Certified Farmers' Market

Sat, August 10, 2019, 8:30 am - 12:00 pm

The 41st annual Healdsburg Farmers’ Market opens for the season at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 4th. The West Plaza lot will come alive with an abundance of delicious and nutritious bounty, entertainment, education and more.

One of California’s original twenty-two farmers’ markets, the Healdsburg Farmers’ Market opened in July 1978, when the village and surrounding area were strictly agricultural. The market was a major weekly event which the whole town attended, whether you were a producer or a consumer. Almost everyone who sold at the market farmed or produced their goods within miles of it.

In 2019 the Healdsburg Certified Farmers’ Market is still considered a vital part of the community, and a weekly reminder of a simpler time in our town’s history. Filled with produce and an impressive selection of flowers, almost all grown in the immediate area, the aim of our market is to help our shoppers to keep their footprint small and to showcase what’s possible to grow in this region.

What’s a certified farmers’ market? This means the people selling you the produce are the growers. They didn’t buy it from a big agricultural producer and bring it to the market. Their farming practices are more environmentally sound and their operations more family-based.

Excellent food producers are a big part of the market, most of whom are local as well. Look for an abundance of meat, seafood, baked goods, pasta, condiments and other edibles. Delicious prepared food and fresh coffee is available, so coming down for breakfast, or brunch is a treat. Sit and enjoy a meal or snack at our ‘coloring and poetry’ tables, set up each week for creative artwork or musings.

Beautiful craft is also featured, with the artisans being part of a seasonal rotation, so each week has a new group of potters, jewelers, clothing makers, and more. All work is made by the applying artist. The Healdsburg Market does not allow imports or mass manufactured goods.

An exciting addition to the Healdsburg Markets this season is a series of educational demonstrations. Some may involve local chefs preparing market goods. Some may teach salsa or tamale making, and others will focus on nutritional information. The goal is to give our attendees more understanding of what the market has to offer.

Many local musicians perform each week: blues, folk, jazz, even Hawaiian music. Healdsburg favorites like Chris Herrod, John Youngblood, Hank Levine and Robin Rogers will play during the season.

On May 28th our Tuesday Market-on-the-Plaza will open, so more information on that will be forthcoming.
