Illumignarly:
What started as a side project for guitarists Derek Nielsen and Scott Manwell back in 2012 continued to grow in scope and intensity over the last few years until three albums and countless shows later, The Illumignarly had evolved into some kind of monster.

But the threads of the band weave their way further back in time than 2012. Whilst still teenagers in the process of forming their first band in their parents’ garages, Manwell and Nielsen went to see Dick Dale perform at the Mystic Theater in Petaluma. It ended up being one of those transcendent experiences that would shift the aspiring musicians’ entire musical perspective. Just a small nudge- almost unnoticeable. But the ocean of life is vast- and even a minuscule change in directional latitude will set you on course for parts of the map you never thought could exist. As Nielsen and Manwell approached Dale after his set to get their tickets signed, the late surf guitar legend placed his hands on each their shoulders, looked them in the eye, and stated confidently “It sounds like you need to play surf. Start a surf band.”

Flash forward to 2012. As Nielsen returned from college to Santa Rosa, he started jamming with Manwell on some surf riffs he had bouncing around his head the last few years. With the addition of bassist Mikey Bollonio and drummer Dylan Stice, the group began performing as The Illumignarly. Bollonio and Stice had both been recruited from heavier and more discordant Sonoma County musical acts (Batman Vs. Predator and Antiphony respectively) and the incorporation of that rhythm section created a foundation for the instrumental surf band that was both crushing and ethereal.

For the next six years, the group embarked on a Team Zisseau-esque journey through the murky and abstract waters of instrumental surf rock; deconstructing the genre and reassembling as they saw fit. Nothing was off limits. Elements of metal, hardcore, new-wave, ska, post-rock…the genre was modified down to the genome. Drummer Gabriel Katz (The Coma Lillies) replaced Stice in late 2016 and the evolution continued. And now in 2019, The Illumignarly rise again from the chaotic waters that birthed them, a hideous triumph of form and function. Half Dick-Dale, half David Lynch,100% gnar.

Cash Pony: Formed in 2009, Cash Pony is a progressive rock band, based in Oakland CA. The band features Charles Lloyd on Sitar and Guitar, Owen Kelley on Guitar, Stephen Wright on Bass, and Gabe Katz on Drums.

Sloth & Turtle has been a part of the Bay Area Math-rock scene for the last three years, starting as a duo, and then eventually adding two other members to fill out their complex yet melodic, tap-guitar laden sound. Their debut EP has been described as a tastefully complex and sonically well-rounded album within the Math-rock scene, with moments of intricate guitar tapping harmonies, as well as complex, building grooves that don’t lose sight of melody.
