As part of California State Parks Week, Jack London State Historic Park will offer “A Mindful Walk” with guide, author, storyteller and musician Jeff Falconer on Thursday, June 13, 2024.
California State Parks Week is presented jointly by California State Parks, Save the Redwoods League, Parks California, and California State Parks Foundation.
Walking Meditation has been practiced for centuries around the world. The everyday activity of walking, combined with an awareness of one’s breath, one’s own body in motion, and one’s surroundings can quickly reward the mindful walker with a deep calm and increased sense of belonging in the natural world. This easy discipline offers a valuable enhancement to the long-established benefits of walking as exercise.
Sonoma resident Jeff Falconer, who has been practicing meditation for over half a century and has distilled his practice down to the essentials. He shares his style of meditation in two new books (available at the event), “This Timeless Breath: Simple Guide to Sitting Meditation” and “This Step Home: Simple Guide to Walking Meditation.”
Falconer will begin the journey at 9:30 a.m. with a brief overview of Walking Meditation, followed by a short standing meditation to ground and center participants before embarking. Walking begins with a relaxed loop around Jack London’s beloved Beauty Ranch. The event will end at approximately 1 p.m.
Those who wish can take the practice deeper with a moderate four-mile hike on the trails of the park.
Much of the walk is on uneven ground. Participants are advised to wear sturdy shoes and bring water. The event will be cancelled in event of heavy rain.
The hike is free. Park admission is $10 per vehicle, up to nine passengers.
Reservations are required and can be made at https://jacklondonpark.com/events/mindful-walk-state-parks-week-2024/.
