EXHIBIT DATES: APRIL 1 – 28. 2024
RECEPTION: Saturday, April 6, 2024: 4 – 6 PM: Join artists Tosya Shore and Carolyn Wilson to celebrate the show. Refreshments will be served.
Sonoma County artist, Tosya Shore, presents People Who Need People, a collection of watercolor paintings that capture the meaningful moments in a person’s life. Each painting elicits a visceral response as the artist’s subjects show a range of emotions from peaceful contemplation to solemnity to happy abandon. Bold color, abstract shapes and intriguing textures interact to heighten the intensity of each work. Wildly swirling her flowing skirts, “Lady in Red,” expresses joyful excitement. We share in a more peaceful moment In “Watching the Tide Roll In.” Mid sequence “Balancing Act” calls the viewer to join the flow of the dance. Explaining the focus of this collection, Shore commented: “I am a people person and love connecting with them.” Not just boring portraits, Shore’s works connect with the viewer like vignettes of the human condition.
Over twenty years ago, Shore took up watercolor painting and it became her passion. Her work is uniquely colorful and bold, which she highlights by sealing her pieces, so they do not have to be framed under glass. A quarter of Shore’s profit from sale of her work in contributed to charity – this year she has chosen the Women’s Recovery Center. Shore has been a member of the Upstairs Art Gallery for four years and exhibited in the region, including participation in the Sebastopol Center for the Arts Open Studio program.
Meet the Artist: Shore will be hosting the Gallery April 3 and 16, 2024 11 am to 6 pm.
The Stairway Small Works Showcase presents Carolyn Wilson’s Color Conversations, a collection of new paper collage paintings that exhibit the rich textures, visual depth and nuanced colors for which the artist is known. These playful explorations are created intuitively, emerging purely from the imagination and realized through tearing and layering hand-colored and hand-printed transparent tissue papers. Wilson is simply responding to what is already there, and the surprises that show up along the way. Floral and tree designs are recurring themes and seem to magically evolve out of nowhere.
Meet the Artist: Wilson will be hosting the Gallery April 5 & 6, 11am to 6 pm.
