La Peña is a cultural and performance space in Berkeley, established by Chilean refugees after the overthrow of the Allende government in Chile. Its chorus has been performing songs focused on social justice in Spanish and English for over 35 years, accompanying themselves on guitars, flutes, drums, and an assortment of Latin American instruments. Composer John Maas, now of Sebastopol, was director of the La Peña chorus in the 1980s, and is now founding director of the Sebastopol Harmonia Community Choir and teaches choir through Sebastopol Center for the Arts.
