Six Concerts in the Season
The 2024-25 season of the Santa Rosa Junior College Chamber Music Series offers North Bay music lovers exceptional quality, tremendous diversity and amazing artistry. Our array of artists come from all over the country, bringing their own unique style and interpretation of the chamber music repertoire that will engage our audiences.
All of the concerts, except one, will be held at the Newman Auditorium on the Santa Rosa Junior College Campus, 1501 Mendocino Avenue. The final concert of the season with violinist Gilles Apap and pianist Eric Ferrand-N’Kaoua will be held at the Glaser Center, 547 Mendocino Avenue in downtown Santa Rosa.

A pioneering, oboe, bassoon and piano ensemble, the Poulenc Trio has garnered international recognition over its 20-year history. With performances in 47 states and at prestigious music festivals around the world, the trio has firmly established itself as one of the most active and sought-after touring piano-wind ensembles in the country. The musicians (Irina Kaplan Lande, piano; Alec Remezau, oboe; and Bryan Young, bassoon) have made a significant contribution to the repertoire for the oboe, bassoon, and piano by commissioning and performing more than 22 new works, including three triple concertos for the trio and full orchestra, showcasing their commitment to pushing the boundaries of their ensemble’s capabilities and expanding the possibilities of chamber music.

Now in his third decade of touring worldwide, American pianist Jon Nakamatsu continues to draw critical and public acclaim for his intensity, elegance and electrifying solo, concerto, and chamber music performances. Catapulted to international attention in 1997 as the Gold Medalist of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition–the only American to achieve this distinction since 1981– Nakamatsu subsequently developed a multi-faceted career that encompasses recording, education, arts administration and public speaking in addition to his vast concert schedule; he has been guest soloist with more than 150 orchestras worldwide. He joined the piano faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 2015.

The Euclid Quartet enjoys one of the most highly regarded reputations of any chamber ensemble of its generation, with its members constituting a multinational mix: violinists Jameson Cooper and Aviva Hakanoglu, violist Luis Enrique Vargas, and cellist Justin Goldsmith. Captivating audiences and critics ranging from Carnegie Hall to school classrooms to radio and television broadcasts, the quartet consistently performs to enthusiastic acclaim throughout the country. Formed in Ohio in 1999, the Euclid Quartet takes its name from the famous Euclid Avenue in Cleveland, home to a wealth of renowned artistic and cultural institutions. Highlights of the Euclid Quartet’s career include significant global recognition as the first American string quartet to be awarded a top prize at the prestigious Osaka International Chamber Music Competition. In 2009 the Euclid Quartet was awarded the esteemed “American Masterpieces” grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Hailed as “the epitome of what chamber musicians should be” Trio Céleste has firmly established itself as one of the most dynamic chamber music ensembles on the classical music scene today. Recent highlights include recital debuts at the Chicago Cultural Center, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, New York;s Carnegie Hall, Seoul Art Center in South Korea, and the world premiere of Paul Dooley’s Concerto Grosso for Piano Trio and Strings, co-commissioned by Trio Céleste and Chamber Music/OC. Trio Céleste was Ensemble-in-Residence at the Clare Trevor School of the Arts at UC Irvine from 2013-2019 and its members are current directors of the acclaimed arts organization Chamber Music/OC where they have been featured in collaborations with violist Paul Coletti, Emerson String Quartet violinist Philip Setzer, and prince; players of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.

The Horszowski Trio has quickly become a vital force in the international chamber music world. Since its debut performance in New York City in 2011, the Trio has toured extensively throughout North America, Europe, the Far East, and India, traversing the extensive oeuvre of traditional piano trio repertoire and introducing audiences to new music that they have commissioned and premiered. In 2023, the “Horszowski Trio Prize” was created by the prestigious Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition to award piano trio winners: a true testament to the Trio’s excellence. The Trio takes its inspiration from the musicianship, integrity, and humanity of the pre-eminent pianist Mieczysław Horszowski (1892-1993). The ensemble’s pianist, Reek Aizawa, was Horszowski’s last pupil at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. Based in New York City, the Horszowski Trio is the Ensemble-in-Residence at the Long School of Music at Bard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and of the Leschetizky Association in New York City.

Virtuosic violinist Gilles Apap returns to our series to perform with pianist Eric Ferrand-N’Kaoua: a dynamic duo you won’t want to miss! Described by Yehudi Menuhin as “a true violinist of the 21st century,” Gilles Apap is known for his virtuosity, unique approach to music and the skill to bring joy to every concert hall. He delivers distinctive performances of the standard classical repertoire combined with genres such as jazz and folk from around the world–the result is unique programming merging the borderlines between musical styles. French pianist Eric Ferrand-N’Kaoua (pronounced Ennkawa) was born near Paris in 1963. He studied with Madeleine de Valmalète from an early age and soon entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur, where he obtained first prize with distinction in piano when only 14, soon followed by a first prize in chamber music. He is also an avid chamber music performer and forms an unconventional duo with the French violinist Gilles Apap.
