The birth of “Cool Jazz” is usually attributed to Miles Davis, but his famous recordings were greatly influenced by the unique big band sound of Claude Thornhill in the early to mid-forties. Two of Thorhill’s arrangers, Gil Evans and Gerry Mulligan, set the stage for not only the wave of “cool” to come, but for just about every contemporary big band composer to follow. Join us in the amazing Weill Hall to hear some of these older cool classics and newer contemporary sounds.
