Wappo Cultural Demonstration

Sun, January 22, 2023, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Join Tektekh and Desirae from the Mishewal-Wappo tribe for a cultural demonstration at Sugarloaf. The demonstration will focus on acorn grinding, the pump drill and shell beads, and how to make string with native plants. They will also share traditional food and drink prepared from native plants.

Space is limited to 20. Tickets are $15 for general audiences, $7.5 for youth (12-17 year olds), students, Sugarloaf members, and Sugarloaf volunteers, and free for children under 12. Meet at the group camp. We will be outside, so dress appropriately. Bring water, a small cup for sampling, and if desired, a snack. In case of rain, the event will be rescheduled to Sunday, 1/29/2023. Parking fees apply.

Ease of access: the group camp is a large area to the left of the Robert Ferguson Observatory. The ground is a mix of soil and woodchips navigable on a power chair. There is accessible parking, an accessible porta-potty, and a water spigot on site. The picnic tables and benches are not ADA-compliant but are available.
