JULY EXHIBIT: WINE COUNTRY LIVING
Opening June 28, exhibit runs through July 25.
Sonoma County artist, Willow LaLand, presents Wine Country Living, a collection of wine-inspired paintings: sweeping vineyard landscapes to still-life renderings that one can almost taste. Working in acrylics or oils, she creates three dimensional illusions through layers of translucent color washes. âItâs a joy to be an artist in Sonoma wine country – inspiration abounds, from the vineyard vistas to the cellars, to that perfect glass of cabernet,â noted LaLand.
Works include paintings started in the opposite color of the finished image, such as bright red under a soft blue sky. LaLandâs Fauve painting series grew out of the popularity of these paintings in primary colors. Much of LaLandâs original work is commissions to paint vineyards or a favorite wine cellar collection. These hyper realistic works inspire collectors to say, âI feel like I just installed a window.â
A third-generation artist, LaLand began exhibiting her paintings at age eleven. She is inspired by early American realists, such as John Frederick Peto and uses techniques developed by 17th century painters to achieve dramatic realism. LaLand has exhibited widely and is internationally collected. She was featured in American Art Collector magazine in 2013 and on KRCB television in 2015.
Meet the artist: LaLand will be hosting the Gallery on July 3, 2021, from 11am â 3pm.
Guest Artist: Local artist, Phyllis Rapp, is back as a guest artist. A popular Upstairs Art Gallery member over the years, she presents a collection of new works painted during the pandemic. Created to lift her own spirits, these works combine pattern, color and texture to present diverse subjects â figure, animals, florals â in a stylized expressionistic mode. These colorful jewels canât help but strike a happy note with viewers. Rapp guest artist exhibit dates: June 28 â August 29, 2021.
The Staircase Showcase features Ron Sumnerâs âSmall Worksâ collection â small watercolor and oil paintings that feature rural scenes: hills, vineyards, cows, wildlife, and barns.    Sumner humorously refers to the latter as âmedicare barns,â iconic structures proudly aging in place in their pealing paint. Sumnerâs fascination with wildlife comes through in his deer painting, âMorning Stroll.â
