The NYC-based ISLE of KLEZBOS will perform a repertoire of neo-traditional folk dance, mystical melodies, Yiddish swing & retro tango, late Soviet-era Jewish drinking songs, re-grooved standards, and genre-defying originals on the Cotati Cabaret stage at Ner Shalom, 85 LaPlaza in Cotati on July 8 at 7PM. The performance is a fundraiser for Ner Shalom.
The soulful, fun-loving all-women’s klezmer powerhouse has been touring from Vienna to Vancouver since its formation in 1998 by drummer/leader Eve Sicular. ISLE of KLEZBOS features alumnae of the Juilliard, Eastman, Berklee and Manhattan Schools of Music. It has won multiple awards from the New York State Council on the Arts, Outmusic, and Sparkplug Foundation.

The band performed for Chamber Music America in World Music & Jazz genres, packed houses in 2017 from Colorado’s JAAMM Fest to the Oberlin Folk Festival to Manhattan’s Pianos on Park, and has recently enjoyed special guest appearances with Alan Alda, Jackie Hoffman, Lisa Kron, and Alan Zweibel.
ISLE of KLEZBOS concert footage has been broadcast internationally on CBS Sunday Morning, CNN WorldBeat, and PBS In The Life, and the band’s live and studio recordings have also been heard on “The L Word” (Showtime), WFMU, and worldwide as well as on film soundtracks for “Grace Paley: Collected Shorts, “Esther Broner: A Weave of Women,” and “Torah Treasures & Curious Trash,” among others.
The band has received commissions from artist Kiki Smith, Grammy-nominee Scissor Sisters, and singer/songwriter Jill Sobule. In addition to annual June KlezBiGay Pride shows, the group has also played for bandleader Eve Sicular’s musical documentary theater hit, J.EDGAR KLEZMER: Songs from My Grandmother’s FBI Files. Their Pride Season debut at NYC’s Center for Jewish History was a multi-media concert version of The Celluloid Closet of Yiddish Film featuring vintage film clips galore plus cinema commentary and live sextet.
Joining drummer, bandleader , film scholar and Isle of Klezbos founder Eve Sicular for this performance will be trumpet / flugelhorn / kudu player/world music composer Pam Fleming; versatile vocalist Melissa Fogarty, hailed by The New York Times for her “delirious abandon” ;Debra Kreisberg, leader of the new jazz trio East Harlem Trio and co-founder, with vocalist Melissa Fogarty, the new jazz quintet The Highliners; accordionist / pianist film score composer Shoko Nagai .

General Admission is $20, VIP tickets are $30, and $10 for kids 12 and under. A VIP upgrade worth 30% of the total ticket price is automatic with purchase of a Summer Series ticket, $57.
