NOVEMBER EXHIBIT: UNDER THE SEA
EXHIBIT DATES: OCTOBER 23 – NOVEMBER 19, 2023
RECEPTION: Saturday, November 4, 2023, 3:30 – 7:00 PM: Join artists Donna Schaffer and Nancy Gray to celebrate the show. Refreshments will be served.
Sonoma County artist Donna Schaffer, presents Under the Sea, a collection of oil paintings that take the viewer on an exploration of the wonders of the underwater world. These works come alive as fantastic life forms shimmer in the filtered light. Schaffer’s passion for the underwater world shines through in the thoughtful way she depicts the ocean’s colorful creatures in their marine environs. From the humble anemones to the majestic whales, this collection opens our eyes to an incredibly fascinating world. The viewer dives to the deep blue depths in “Humpback Ballet.” The blues are contrasted by the bold splashes of color in “Bat Starfish and Red Anemone” and “Nemo’s Cousin.” “I am thrilled to be able to combine two of my greatest passions in this show – art and scuba diving,” said Schaffer. Her marine art is not just “pretty fish;” she uses her botanist or biologist eye to ensure her subject matter is respectfully rendered with regard to its habits and environment. As she says, “One should paint what you know.”
Schaffer is a local artist, known for her wine country landscapes. An artist with many interests, this exhibit taps into her love of scuba diving, which she has done for over forty years. Her scuba adventures have taken her from the California coast to the South Pacific and the Caribbean. Schaffer has been a member of the Upstairs Art Gallery for twenty years and exhibited throughout the region, including eight years as a Sonoma County Art Trails artist.

The Stairway Small Works Showcase presents Nancy Gray’s Heartfelt Thanks, a collection of paintings that salute Thanksgiving, her favorite season, and celebrates the abundance of our wine country harvest. These works – hearts, landscapes, flowers – delight the eye with a vibrant palette of rich warms, reds, oranges and golds. “Through this show, I want to express my gratitude for our life here in wine country and my heartfelt thanks to my loved ones, family and friends,” explained Gray.
