Show from 4:45-7:00pm with one intermission
The Flying Salvias call their music Ameri-kinda, as it repeatedly strays over the Americana border. Their lyrics contemplate the mystery of creation, riff on Shakespeare, visit a friend in jail, compare misguided love with chameleon car paint, or swing from depression and doubt to simple joy; all while wrapped in the rhythms of beatnik jazz, swing, rock, country, folk, rhumba, samba, old hippie, or whatever groove they deem appropriate at the time. Henry is well known for his expressive piano style and impressive chops, and has been a popular player with many local favorites including Maurice Tani, The Jones Gang, and Jenny Kerr. Kathleen’s voice is full of heartfelt emotional appeal whether crooning, belting, or just singing a story. David Phillips has been playing pedal steel with Kathleen and/or Henry for decades. David is a spectacular talent, whose openness to exploration and experimentation is more than capable of keeping up with the Salvias. For this show, Chris Kee (who likewise has a long playing history with all of us) will join the band on acoustic bass. In keeping with the “together and alone” theme of this show, Jane Selkye will be on hand to add her lustrous voice, too. The Flying Salvias have recorded 2 CDs, and a third recording is in the works.
Springhouse is a collaboration between long time friends and musical co-conspirators Jane Selkye (Me Jane, Plain Jane Trio, Magic City Chamber of Commerce), Chris Kee (Houston Jones, Jim Campilongo, Peter Rowan, Buddy Miller) and David Phillips (everybody from Johnny Paycheck to the San Francisco Symphony to Metallica). Showcasing Selkye’s quicksilver voice, the astral expanse of Phillips’s pedal steel, all supported by Kee’s architectural bass work and leaning heavily into Selkye and Kee’s songwriting, the trio performs music of the Americana Borderlands: from artsong to the roadhouse and places in between.
