Handel’s oratorio “Messiah,” an open participatory sing-along event for singers and listeners of all abilities, known for its rousing “Hallelujah” chorus and chronicling in vocal and instrumental music the life and resurrection of Jesus, returns Saturday, December 14 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., to the acoustic dome of Sebastopol Methodist Church, 500 North Main Street, opposite Safeway. First performed in 1741, this is the 30th year it will be presented in Sebastopol under conductor John Maas. An all-volunteer effort, singers and listeners of any ability welcome; sheet music available for those who do not have their own. Accompaniment by strings: Yihe Wang and Decky Thornton, violins; Ellen Watson, viola; Tom Fattaruso, cello; and Todd Higgins, trumpet. Lead vocalists are Melinda Moreaux and Nancy Berger, soprano; Sadie Sonntag , alto; Greg Hoff, tenor; and Benjamin Mertz, bass. Free admission, $10-20 donation requested, to benefit charities and music programs.
