The Staehely Brothers (Al & John) migrated to California in 1971 from Austin before Austin had made its musical bones. Al joined the already successful L.A. band, Spirit, as lead singer, bass player and songwriter. Upon Randy California’s departure, John joined Spirit in time to record the “Feedback” LP for Epic Records. Tours of the U.S., Canada and Australia followed, including headlining Carnegie Hall. When Spirit disbanded, Epic Records signed the brothers and released “STA-HAY-LEE” in 1973.
John went on to play lead guitar with Jo Jo Gunne, Robert Palmer, Bob Dylan, John Hiatt, and Paul Rodgers & Kenny Jones (The Law).
Al has had solo records release by Polydor in Europe and SteadyBoy Records in the U.S. Al’s songs have been recorded by Keith Moon, Bobbi Gentry, John Cipollina & Nick Gravenites, Marty Balin, Peter Cox (Go West). Al toured Europe with Cipollina & Gravenites and recorded with them the LP, “Monkey Medicine”, in Hamburg.
The brothers reside in Houston where, by day, John is an art dealer and Al is an entertainment lawyer.
