Stella Heath, Bay Area-based vocalist and bandleader brings her acclaimed exploration of Nat King Cole’s early career to the Feinstein’s stage. Backed by a swinging trio, itself a tribute to the famous King Cole Trio (1937-1951) and featuring San Francisco guitarist-historian-writer Nick Rossi, Heath performs a mix of material written by and for the legendary vocalist-pianist during what may be called his Jazz Years. Until the 1950s, Cole was known almost as much for his excellent, innovative piano playing as part of the one of the country’s most popular, influential jazz combos as he was for his inimitable vocal style. The show delves deep into the Cole catalog and presents hits, obscurities, and standards from these early days with historical context and commentary by Rossi.
