Helm
From original compositions that have become classics in the worlds of Tribal and Belly Dance to traditional music from throughout the Mediterranean, Helm has continually expanded their repertoire since the band’s beginning in the early 1990’s. Based in Marin County, CA, Helm had toured internationally with performances in London, Rome, Lima, Istanbul, Moscow, Australia, and the island of La Reunion. In addition to their 12 plus albums, Helm has provided sound tracks for both film and television productions. Helm’s performance history includes over thirty Renaissance Faires, multiple appearances at the acclaimed San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, and numerous corporate and private functions.
The Bulgarian word for apple, Yabulka plays Bulgarian village-style dance music for the Redwood Empire. Barbara Babin (gadulka) and Jim Avera (gaida) have had multiple trips to Bulgaria and have studied with many master teachers, creating the melodic framework for the group — while Jana Mariposa (tupan) and Ken Genetti (tambura) hold down the rhythm and chordal harmony. This performance features male vocal harmonies on several numbers with special guest vocalist Andy Toplarski, singing along with Jim. Put on your dancing shoes and join the line!
