THE FIRE CATS

A Benefit Screening of The Fire Cats Documentary to Highlight Heroes from

2017 Tubbs Fire and 2018 Camp Fire

On August 14, 2022 Rialto Cinemas Sebastopol will host two screenings of The Fire Cats – Save Something Small, a feature documentary by Writer/Producer/Director Katharine Parsons of Ravenshoe Media, Ltd. to benefit Forgotten Felines of Sonoma County and Field Haven Feline Center.

Winner of Cannes World Film Festival for “MOST INSPIRATIONAL FILM”,  The Fire Cats allows the audience to experience an in-depth look at the heroic efforts of rescue organizations such as Forgotten Felines and Field Haven during the 2017 Tubbs Fire and 2018 Camp Fire.

The film follows the countless efforts of local cat rescuers (numbering in the hundreds) such as Forestville resident Shannon Jay.  Shannon estimates that he spent over 1800 hours in the field working the Tubbs Fire and Camp Fires combined. He and his fellow rescuers spent months rescuing “fire cats” who survived a wildfire hot enough to melt glass and reuniting them with their families who had lost everything.

Director Katharine Parsons spent four years making the documentary, first designed as a documentary short about the 2017 Tubbs Fire, and then expanded into a feature when the Camp Fire destroyed Paradise a year later. “I thought I understood cats before I started the documentary,” Parsons said, “But what I learned about their ability to survive these horrible fires just blew me away. And I learned what happens when ordinary people run towards a disaster instead of away from it. It was a transformative experience for the rescuers, the fire families, the cats, and even for me.”

Coming more than four years after Tubbs Fire, Parsons was heartened to learn of people’s responses during virtual screenings that were hosted by the recent festival Oakville Festivals of Film and Art in Canada.“People had watch parties here in Sonoma County and there were definitely tears but it was very healing for them. And many of them are returning, having bought tickets for both the 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM shows. I still cry when I watch the reunions between the fire cats and their families on screen. It gets me every time.”

There will be post-screening panel discussions with Director Katharine Parsons, the Executive Directors of Forgotten Felines and Field Haven, also participating are Shannon Jay (featured in the film) and members of Law Enforcement/First Responders.

The Fire Cats includes first responder footage as well as film donated by the rescuers. Narrated by Canadian actor Philip Craig (Time Traveler’s Wife, Hemlock Grove), it is currently on the festival circuit worldwide.
