Valley of the Moon Music Festival Season 10

Sat, July 13, 2024, 4:00 pm - 11:55 pm

With the 10th Anniversary Season: Music Across the Americas, the Valley of the
Moon Music Festival extends its stylistically multifaceted and uniquely gutsy approach to the chamber music of 19th- and 20th-century Latin America. Soaring into the 2024 Season, VMMF centers Classical and Romantic chamber music from Mexico, Venezuela, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, and Cuba, presented alongside contemporaneous European works, all played on historical instruments.

By reintroducing the music of influential Latin American composer-performers to the modern concert repertoire, VMMF brings to life a historical moment when these works—and their creators—were celebrated by European, North American, and South American audiences in equal measure. An esteemed array of Blattner Lecture Series speakers illuminates the season’s programming with insight and expertise, as does a new podcast about the season, featuring discussions with Festival Artists and musicologists.

The 10th Anniversary Season presents the music of Latin American luminaries—such as Cuban virtuoso JosĂ© White, Venezuelan multi-hyphenate Teresa Carreño, Brazilian favorite Heitor Villa-Lobos and his spiritual descendant guitarist-composer SĂ©rgio Assad, tango master Astor Piazzola, and turn-of-the-century Mexican composer Manuel Ponce, among many others—alongside beloved favorites from Europe, just as it would have been heard when it was written.

Blending the rich cultural life and temperate summer climate of the Sonoma Valley, VMMF’s three outdoor Alfresco concerts, perennial audience favorites, return with a new location this season. Stunning chamber music, scenery, and wine complement each other at the Bartholomew Estate Winery, La Luz Center, and Buena Vista Winery. The 10th Anniversary Season also includes an intimate Artist Spotlight featuring VMMF Laureate and 2020 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient violinist Rachell Ellen Wong.

Co-Festival Directors cellist Tanya Tomkins and fortepianist Eric Zivian are joined by
colleagues, 2024 Cremona Apprentices, and Apprentice Laureates for a multi-generational lineup including violinists Elizabeth Blumenstock, Marc Destrubé, Keir GoGwilt, and Jennifer Frautschi, cellists Madeleine Bouissou and Elisabeth Reed, and pianists Allegra Chapman and Audrey Vardanega. Cuban pianist Adonis Gonzalez, NYC-based cellist Coleman Itzkoff, and Bay Area guitarist Marc Teicholz all make Festival débuts this season.
